2015 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.-César Chávez Commemorative Luncheon 

Speakers Dr. Timothy K. Eatman and Ruben Solis Garcia answer the call to inspire and educate. These two well-respected experts will address social issues, black/brown relationships, cultural similarities, plights and future directions. This event celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (pastor, activist, humanitarian) and César Chavez (labor leader, farm worker advocate) for their lifelong fight for civil rights. We come together unified, as we continue to demand racial equity.

Ashé Cultural Arts Center proudly announces the Martin Luther King, Jr.- César Chávez Luncheon, named for two giants who led non-violent peace movements for the civil rights for African Americans and Mexican farm workers, respectively.     

The guest speakers for this occasion are experts who are champions for cultural equity.

Dr. Timothy K. Eatman is Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Director for Research of Imagining America at Syracuse University. He provides leadership for coordinated research within the consortium and among national collaborators having primary responsibility for the Tenure Team Initiative on Public Scholarship.

Eatman conducts research that centers on equity issues in higher education by examining the relationship between institutional policies, programs and college student development. A dimension of his research agenda that more directly demonstrates his perspective as an educational sociologist and interest in equity issues examines the pipeline to graduate school for students from groups that are traditionally underrepresented in higher education.

Ruben Solis Garcia has been working to advance people's liberation movements for over 45 years. He co-founded the Southwest Workers' Union in 1988 in San Antonio, and two decades later, SWU is one of the most significant examples of community labor organizing, racial justice work, and environmental justice organizing in the country.  In 2005, Garcia founded Grassroots Global Justice Alliance, and in 2010 transitioned out of SWU.  In 2011, he founded the University Sin Fronteras to respond to the critical need for advanced social movement study based in practice, history, and theory. 

The United States is raw with racial tension following recent events, as well as with those occurrences that are burned into our memories.  As we celebrate the life work of Dr. King and Mr. Chavez, what better time than now to join forces as one community in our quest for racial equity.
