We have a lot to celebrate as a community this year as we have seen the power of what is possible when we all work together. There is one man in particular who has gone the extra mile for ANVCA in 2017/2018 and that is the Honorable United States Senator Dan Sullivan.
It is through his leadership in the Senate that ANVCA was fortunate enough to have an audience at the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee to testify on ANCSA contaminated lands in early 2017. It was at this hearing that the dialogue was open to amend the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) to explicitly lift legal liability for ANCs that had received contaminated sites as part of their ANCSA settlement. Language was drafted by ANVCA and was ultimately included in the 2018 Omnibus Appropriations Act, also included were significant grant dollars for site evaluation and clean up.
We are currently working with The Congressional Delegation, especially Senator Sullivan, to introduce creative new ways of thinking about clean-up and mitigation in Alaska. Join ANVCA in welcoming home Senator Dan Sullivan, and thank him for his efforts on our behalf.
