Illinois Tollway: Inspection and Load Rating of Post-Tensioned Segmental Bridges

Presented by: Brett Sauter, P.E., S.E. & Elias Ajami (ISTHA)

Abstract:

The interchange of the Veterans Memorial Tollway (I-355) and the Ronald Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) in Downers Grove, Illinois contains four post-tensioned segmental concrete box girder bridges. Built in 1988, they range in length from 558’ to over 2,000’ on horizontally curved alignments and are supported by tall piers with post-tensioned elements. To maintain the integrity of this vital infrastructure, the Illinois Tollway tasked Ciorba to perform full in-depth inspection, material testing, assessment of the P-T condition, and load rating through time-dependent Finite Element analysis for current and additional future lane configurations.
