 Morning Workshops 

 1

Presenter:        Rev. Dr. John Tyson, Colgate Rochester Crozier Divinity School Faculty

Title:                “Born in Crisis & Shaped by Faith: Our United Methodist Faith and Practice” Part 1                                  (full day workshop)

Description:     This 4hr seminar (two parts) will examine the religious and social crises that gave

birth to the early Methodist Movement in 18th century England, as well as the faith-filled responses of the Wesley brothers, and others which led to the spiritual explosion known as “the Methodist Revival” and the formation of early Methodism.

Presenter:        Rev. Vonda Fossitt, GV District Superintendent

Title:                “Coffee with the D.S.” – morning only

Description:     Spend a relaxed time with DS Vonda in conversation on several topics and tour of                        the new District Office space.

Presenter:        Asbury First Outreach Team

Title:                Hands-on Outreach  (morning only)

Description:     This workshop will serve as an opportunity for program participants to tour three

of the campus outreach programs at Asbury First United Methodist Church (URWell Clinic, Dining & Caring Center, and Storehouse), while additionally

Participating in three volunteer activities which include:

1. Baking cakes and other treats for our guests at the Dining Center.

2. Work with Storehouse team to sort clothes for the upcoming week.

3. Assemble Valentine’s Day Gift bags for Dining Center guests.

Presenter:        Jessica White, Niagara Frontier District Lay Leader, UNYUMC

Title:                “The Role of Laity in the Leadership of the Church” (morning only)

Description:     This workshop will review what responsibilities there are as a Lay Leader of the

local church and what the role of Laity is in leadership of the church, and how to partner with clergy brothers and sisters in living the mission of the Church.

Presenter:        Rev. Stephen Cady, Pastor, Asbury First UMC

Title:                “Preaching that Matters: Separating that Good News from the Fake News”                                                                                                                            (morning only)

Description:     In a world of division, violence, and the 24-hour news cycle, how can we, as

preachers and congregations, proclaim a truth that will set us free? This workshop, for clergy and laity alike, will explore how to preach the Gospel honestly and how to be a congregation that is prepared to embrace it when it is heard. It will wrestle with preaching through violence and political unrest as well as speaking to issues of the day with grace

Title:                “Vacation Bible School Workshop” (morning only)

Description:     Run an effective outreach to your community and bring your congregation

together by having a Vacation Bible School. We will talk about hints, successes and things to avoid. This workshop will showcase the 2018 VBS kits from multiple publishers, including Group and Cokesbury.

Title:                “More Than Another Church Meeting”

                        (same workshop offered both morning and afternoon)

Description:     Creating the right environment matters. Often our church meetings are not an

environment people want to be a part of, and they do not help the congregation accomplish the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. Join us as we explore what it means to use the pattern of loving, learning, and leading, to create an environment God can use to do even greater things that we can imagine. Help your congregations do more than have another church meeting.

Title:                “Transforming Conflict with Style”

                        (same workshop offered both morning and afternoon)

Description:     Conflict is a part of life, even (sometimes especially) in the church. Participants

will begin to understand the various styles of responding to conflict, become aware of their own preferences and how their style might change as conflict intensifies, and start the process of increasing one’s repertoire of responses.

Title:                “Sustainable Youth Ministry”

Description:     Tips, tools and strategies for creating and developing a sustainable youth

                        program.

Description:     Ordering the church for greater vitality is a workshop on effective ways to

develop and direct leadership in the church. Gain a richer understanding on how to order the church leadership. Especially helpful for Administrative Council chairs, lay leaders and heads of committees. The workings of the Spirit come alive when the Body of Christ is moving by the power of the Holy Spirit. I Corinthians 14:40 – “but all things should be done decently and in order.”

Presenter:        Roger and Donna Cullen, UNY Volunteer in Missions Coordinators

Title:                “God’s Mission: Our Journey” (afternoon only)

Description:     Today is a critical time for you to demonstrate your faith by living in mission. The

nature of mission lies central to Jesus’s commandment for every disciple: to live the Gospel of Jesus Christ, being God's love with your neighbors in all places. The disciple’s call to God’s mission isn’t voluntary or optional. Come explore avenues of discipleship through mission with emphasis on a team approach. Receive resources for connecting your call to relevant missions, finding training opportunities, and receiving support. Discover God’s call on your life through

disaster response, mission and service.
