The selection of the Leadership class is based on each applicant's professional and personal commitment to the community.

Selection Criteria:

  • Evidence of leadership abilities
  • Interest in and potential to provide leadership to the Spearfish community
  • Desire to expand volunteer involvement
  • Evidence of current and/or previous commitment to community service
  • Potential for service within one’s own organization

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS

  • Participants and their organizations must be willing to commit the necessary time it takes to fully participate in the program.
  • Class members may have no more than two absences.
  • Attendance is critical and all necessary arrangements should be made prior to applying. 

SCHEDULE

This 9-month program runs September-May, meeting the second Thursday of each month from 8:30-3:30.

TUITION

Tuition for Leadership Spearfish is $650 for members, $900 for non-members.

  • Tuition covers expenses for meals, notebooks, bus tours, graduation, and all other costs incidental to the operation of the program.
  • Tuition may be paid by the candidate´s employer, a sponsor, or the candidate.
  • Tuition is non-refundable. Participants who are selected but fail to meet the time commitment and are dropped from the program will not receive a tuition refund.

Since 1986, the Spearfish Area Chamber of Commerce has promoted and fostered the development of leadership in the greater Spearfish community. Leadership Spearfish is a program designed to meet the community´s need for active participation of informed and dedicated community leaders. This program works to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and expertise among leaders of area businesses and organizations.

Since its inception, the program has graduated more than 550 leaders into the Spearfish area. The 9-month program is designed to promote a better understanding of this community, build and enhance leadership skills, and develop a strong network of community leaders.

With keynote speakers, panel discussions, team-building exercises, problem solving, and site visits, participants gain valuable insight into the local economy. The topics change as the issues, challenges, and opportunities of the community change. Participants have VIP access to the many different industries that create the positive climate of Spearfish.

The program is open to all people who live or work in the Spearfish area, from all segments of the community, all career levels, and long term to new residents.

GOALS

The purpose of Leadership Spearfish is reflected in these goals:

  • Education - develop awareness of the Spearfish area, its challenges and opportunities. To educate and motivate leaders to greater involvement in the community
  • Orientation - structure and features of the community
  • Training - strengthen leadership abilities by identifying leadership styles, skills and possibilities
  • Connection - networking between class members and community leaders, forming a network of informed, concerned citizens who can help guide the future growth of the community.
