Big Data and Privacy:
Do You Know Where Your Data Is?

WNG Technology Roundtable

Thursday, March 19, 2015
4:00 PM - 6:15 PM

Please join the WNG Technology Roundtable when we convene a panel of experts, who will have a conversation with us about big data and privacy.

Our Panelists:

Peter Cresse - Javlin Inc, Executive Vice President
TK Eppley - Silent Circle, Chief of Staff
Andy Hunn - Resonate, Co-Founder & Chief Operating Officer
Nnake Nweke - Federal Communications Commission, Branch Chief, and Chairman of the WNG Technology Roundtable (moderator)
Tim Owen - Secure Missions Solutions (a Parsons company), Chief Engineer, Strategy and Business Development

About Our Topic:

Like it or not, by using technology such as your mobile apps, shopping online, interacting on social media, visiting a doctor who uses electronic records, and through countless other everyday acts, we are generating a real time digital foot print.

Big data generally describes a wide range of data sets so massive, diverse, or complex, that conventional data processing applications cannot adequately capture, store, or analyze them. These data sets are generated from the increasing amount of Internet-enabled devices and sensor technologies embedded in all kinds of devices, including cell phones, GPS transceivers, radio-frequency identification (RFID) tag readers, smart meters, and heart monitoring implants. The exponential growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) - ecosystem of sensor-embedded devices connected to the Internet - will increase the amount of big data generated today by several orders of magnitude. Big data offers tremendous benefits, but also poses some challenges.

The benefits that big data affords us include advances in medicine, education, telecommunications and transportation, improved product offerings, more efficient manufacturing processes, more effectively tailored entertainment and advertisements, and advances in security surveillance technology. Notwithstanding these benefits, big data presents some concerns and challenges, including the ability to protect individual privacy and also prevent potential discriminatory outcome from categorizing consumers in ways that may affect them unfairly, or even unlawfully.

Our panelists will provide information on the several benefits of big data, how businesses can leverage big data, and the challenges associated with analyzing and using big data.
