Keynote: Leading from the Edge by Kimberly Debus
As a "religion for our time", Unitarian Universalism is uniquely poised to address the changing needs of a wounded world. Yet there are changes inside our walls as well, and they can be just as unsettling. As energetic and visionary Boomers head toward retirement, new generations of younger, more pragmatic members are growing in influence. This time of transition offers opportunities and challenges alike. Taking a cue from generational theory, we'll look at what these transitions mean for congregational leadership, stewardship, and outreach - and how to keep our balance while standing on the edge of a new era of Unitarian Universalism.
Since 2004, Kimberly Debus has been actively involved in leadership development at her congregation in Saratoga Springs, NY, and the St. Lawrence District. In addition to her work in heart-led worship and music, Kimberly's training in generational theory has informed further work in understanding the changes in our denomination. She leads a variety of workshops on generational dynamics in congregational leadership, stewardship, religious education, and worship. She is currently attending Union Theological Seminary in the City of New York, pursuing ordination as a Unitarian Universalist minister. She is also a writer, editor, and singer. Kim blogs at http://blogs.wordalchemy.net/fringe/.
