Course Abstract:
Manualized treatment can be useful for homework but it does not form the essential therapeutic alliance. Forming an alliance with an adolescent requires relational skills from the therapist. This training will focus on simple. easy to implement micro skills that foster increased relationship building with teens in general and specifically those with substance use disorders.
Course Objective:
1. Achieve an understanding of specific skills that assist in forming a therapeutic relationship with a teen and why skills are preferred over a manualized process
2. Be able to use the “House Metaphor” as a tool in clinical observation and as a developmental model of therapeutic relationships with adolescents
3. Understand why “Alliance” means “Relationship”___________________________________________________
