Presenting on "Substance Use Amongst Teens in Military Families: Their brains, behaviors, and challenges"


Course Abstract:

The presentation will provide an overview of military teens and their risk for substance use.  The discussion will explore how teen brain development impacts their behaviors. Core components of systemic functioning within the military culture will be examined and reviewed. The speaker will share examples of the military teen’s exacerbated challenges and risks. Finally, tools for overcoming these challenges will be introduced. See attached

Course Objectives:

  1. Teen brain development and associated behaviors will be described.
  2. Participants will become familiar with family systems through a military lens.
  3. The impact of operational stress onto the teen will be reviewed.
  4. Intervention and prevention tools will be introduced.



This course meets the qualifications for 1 hour continuing education credit for MFT's, LPCC's, LEP's, and/or LCSW's required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) provider number - PCE5216

This course meets the qualifications for 1 hour continuing education credit for addiction professionals required by the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC) provider number - 130835.
