A Texas Stream Team Core Water Quality Citizen Scientist Training for new volunteers will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, February 15, 2020, at Houston Audubon Raptor & Education Center, 3997 River Drive, Houston.
This training is co-hosted by the Houston-Galveston Area Council and Bayou Preservation Association. The training is open to volunteers interested in conducting water quality monitoring in the greater Houston-Galveston area, and is primarily focused on recruiting volunteers for Bayou Preservation Association's new local monitoring group. Waterways of interest for their group include Brays Bayou, Sims Bayou, White Oak Bayou, Greens Bayou, and more.

Both Phase I and Phase II of the training will be completed in this one-day training session.
Phase I (morning session): Hands-on training in a classroom setting.
Lunch: 30-minute lunch. Please bring a sack lunch and drinks. To make the most of the training time, we will not be leaving for lunch.
Phase II (afternoon session): Conduct monitoring procedures in the field under supervised conditions. Dress appropriately for the weather as this phase is done outdoors.
The Texas Stream Team program is a statewide network of trained volunteers and partners working together to collect quality-assured data about Texas surface water bodies and to ensure information is available to all Texans. There are more than 400 volunteers collecting water quality data from lakes, rivers, and streams in programs across the state.

Training Phase I
Hands-on training in a classroom setting. Explains how to handle the monitoring equipment and demonstrates the tests. Volunteers then perform the tests under the close supervision of the trainer. Adherence to safety procedures is emphasized. Approximately 3 hours.
Training Phase II
Provides volunteers the opportunity to conduct the monitoring procedures in the field. Safety considerations in monitoring and site selection are emphasized. Volunteers conduct the tests with limited supervision and assistance of the trainer. Trainer carefully observes volunteers' procedures, answers questions, and corrects errors in procedure and safety. Approximately 3 hours.
