Science and religion are uniquely human activities, but they differ in methodology. Science relies on reason and empiricism, while religion emphasizes revelation and sacredness. Thus, science and religion can be seen as complementary pursuits of truth.

The main thesis of this conference is that the current debate is not between science and religion, but really is between religion and the philosophy of scientific materialism – also known as physicalism -- a philosophy which stresses that all activities and phenomena (including consciousness) can be explained solely in terms of matter and energy, subject to the laws of physics and to chance.  In essence, scientific materialism leaves no room for the concepts of God or intelligent design as an explanation for the creation and workings of the universe.

Over the past several decades, science has made amazing advances, which now allow it to weigh in as an arbiter in this debate between the worldview of the religionist and that of the materialist.  As opposed to just a century ago, it now seems that there is mounting scientific evidence that there is more to the universe than just matter and energy interacting according to the laws of chance.
