CCUS as a Regional Economic Development Tool:  Planning and Design Considerations

 With Special Guest Speaker,

Kevin C. O’Brien, PhD, Director

University of Illinois - Sustainable Technology Center

The A&WMA Lake Michigan States Section and the Union League Club Environmental Committee are pleased to invite you to join us to hear Kevin O’Brien speak at the March 21st Environmental Breakfast on the University of Illinois – Sustainable Technology Center’s Carbon Capture Program.

Kevin O’Brien, Ph.D., is the Director of the Illinois Sustainable Technology Center (ISTC) – an organization dedicated to the use of sustainability to drive economic development within the state of Illinois. The ISTC assists organizations in enhancing their “Triple Bottom Line”, i.e. impact on people, planet, and profits. This enables job growth and regional development while maintaining the natural resources of Illinois.

One of the major concerns has been the impact of Carbon Capture Utilization and Sequestration on regional economies. We submit that CCUS provides a means for regional economic growth and job creation.  In order to achieve these benefits, it is necessary to re-build and re-design the structure of the regional carbon supply chain. This includes (1) developing a methodology to evaluate large scale capture options for regional power plants, (2) evaluating a portfolio of options to utilize the captured CO2 that are relevant to the needs of the local economy, (3) establishing public-private partnerships that help incentivize the newly formed / newly revised carbon supply chain.

The state of Illinois, through the University of Illinois, is demonstrating on a large pilot scale the technical feasibility of retrofitting power plants with the Linde/BASF carbon capture system. This presentation shares the experience gained and progress achieved, along with identification of issues and challenges that need to be overcome from a technical, financial, and policy perspective. It discusses up-front design considerations when the eventual utilization of the capture CO2 is one of the ultimate goals.  It also reviews steps that are taken that address workforce development needs throughout the carbon supply chain. It also discusses a strategy for deployment of CCUS throughout the state.

COST:  The cost to attend for non-Union League Club members is $40 per person which includes breakfast and any presentation handouts.  Students are invited to join us at a special price of $20 per person.

RSVP:  Due to limited seating and our arrangement with the Union League Club, advance registration is required to guarantee availability. Reservations and payment can be made by clicking the reservation button below.  Reservations may be cancelled for a full refund only if we are notified 48 hours in advance of the event. Union League Club members should contact ULC to make their reservations.

CREDIT:  Attendees are eligible to receive Continuing Legal Education (CLE) or Professional Development Hours (PDH) credit.
