Regional Challenge to Ozone Attainment in the Lake Michigan Basin

 With Special Guest Speaker:

Zac Adelman, Exective Director, LADCO

Please join us for a joint breakfast meeting of the A&WMA Lake Michigan States Section and the Environmental Committee of the Union League Club on Tuesday, February 20th.

The Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium (LADCO) is a non-profit organization established in 1989 by the States of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The State of Ohio joined LADCO in 2004 and the State of Minnesota joined in 2012.

The main purposes of LADCO are to provide technical assessments for and assistance to its member states on regional air quality problems, including ozone, fine particles, regional haze, and air toxics; and to provide a forum for its member states to discuss regional air quality issues.

LADCO has been instrumental in assisting member states achieve significant air quality improvements since its inception.

LADCO’s current responsibilities include five main program tasks:

  1. Support development of ozone, PM2.5, and regional haze SIPs,
  2. Address other regional air quality issues (e.g., assist state air monitoring, support multi-pollutant planning, and conduct work related to energy and air quality),
  3. Provide a forum for its member state to discuss air quality issues,
  4. Support outreach efforts, and
  5. Organize and coordinate training for member states

Mr. Adelman’s presentation will focus on the first of these items, focusing on the regional challenge to ozone attainment in the Lake Michigan Basin and the ongoing Lake Michigan Ozone Study as well as the work being conducted to address regional haze in the Great Lakes states.

Mr. Zac Adelman has been the Executive Director of the Lake Michigan Air Directors Consortium since September 2017. Before joining LADCO, he worked for 15 years at the University of North Carolina Institute of the Environment. As a principal investigator at UNC he was a senior emissions and air quality modeler, leading regulatory and research projects to develop and apply software systems for studying ground level ozone and particulates. Zac has M.S. and B.S.P.H. degrees from UNC Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering.
