Bright Kids Who Can't Keep Up

We live in a world where quick responding is considered an essential skill; however, some children feel left behind. Difficulties with processing speed cut across disorders such as learning disabilities and ADHD. Dr. Braaten will provide the audience with both an overview of processing speed and its relationship to today's quick-paced lifestyles, classroom environments, and home lives. The program will also review the biology and neurospychology of processing speed, how it manifests in classrooms and social relationships, and the accommodations and interventions teachers and other professionals can implement to support the student.
Dr. Ellen Braaten, is a renowned psychologist, researcher, television contributor and author, and Director of the Learning and Emotional Assessment Program at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Her career spans over 30 years, with a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Colorado State University, and a post-doctoral fellowship in Child/Adult Psychology at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. She is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Braaten has authored several books, including The Child Clinician's Report Writing Handbook, Straight Talk About Psychological Testing for Kids and Finding the Right Mental Health Care for Your Child. Her most recent book, Bright Kids Who Can't Keep Up, co-authored wih Brian Willoughby, has received a starred-review from Library Journal.
Attention Girls! Helping Girls Face Their ADHD

Dr. Quinn will speak to the gender-specific manifestations of ADHD in preschool, elementary and high school. The program will provide an overview of the Executive Function and social/emotional challenges of girls with ADHD. The contribution of cultural expectations and puberty/biology on identification and treatment will also be discussed. Teachers, medical and mental health professionals will leave with an understanding of the optimal accommodations, interventions and treatments that will result in improved outcomes for girls with ADHD.
Dr. Patricia Quinn, is a developmental pediatrician, and a well-known international expert, author and speaker on the topic of ADHD. She received her M.D. degree and completed her Pediatric Fellowship in Developmental Pediatrics and Pediatric Psychopharmacology at Georgetown University Medical School. Over two decades, Dr. Quinn has specialized in issues confronting girls and women with ADHD, as well as high school and college students with the disorder. Dr. Quinn has authored and co-authored several bestselling books on the topic, including Understanding Girls with ADHD, 100 Questions and Answers about ADHD in Women and Girls, and Attention, Girls! A Guide to Learn All about Your ADHD. The books ADHD and the College Student: The Everything Guide to Your Most Urgent Questions and Putting on the Brakes: Understanding and Taking Control of Your ADD or ADHD were released in May 2012. In 2000, Dr. Quinn received the CHADD Hall of Fame Award for her work in these areas.
Morning:
- Gain an understanding of the biology and neuropsychology of processing speed.
- Discover the relationship between processing speed and disorders such as LD and ADHD.
- Receive practical intervention strategies for home and school to treat challenges with social adjustment and academic achievement.
- Gain an understanding of the gender specifiic manifestations of ADHD in girls from preschool through high school.
- Learn the unique features of ADHD in this population including co-morbid disorders, executive function and social emotional challenges.
- Explore the educational accommodations and treatment options to support girls with ADHD while considering the influence of cultural expectations and biology/puberty on the outcome.

Educators, Counselors, Mental Health Professionals, Psychologists, Speech-Language Pathologists and Social Workers.
Psychologists: Cincinnati Children's is approved by the Ohio Psychological Association-MCE Program to offer continuing education for psychologists. Cincinnati Children's (provider #310833936) maintains responsibility for the program. This program is approved for 6 hours of MCE credit.
Social Workers: Cincinnati Children's is an approved provider of counselor continuing education by the State of Ohio Counselor and Social Work Board (RCX071002). This program is approved for 6.0 hours in Special Populations.
School Personnel: A certificate of attendance will be awarded, acknowledging 6 contact hours.
Speech and Language: ASHA CEU's are pending.
