PFAS, or per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances, are manufactured chemicals that do not break down over time and are detrimental to health and the environment. An expert panel will discuss the imperative to reduce and eventually eliminate the environmental dangers of PFAS that permeate land, water and air. With more than 9,000 classifications, PFAS are present in consumer products such as cookware, cosmetics, food wrappers and water-repellent fabrics. Bioaccumulation of PFAS poses significant adverse health risks, and scientists estimate that PFAS are in the bloodstreams of 98 percent of Americans.
