The New Hampshire Arts Learning Network is pleased to present Competency-based Assessment in the Arts, a professional development workshop facilitated by Marcia McCaffrey, Arts Consultant at the New Hampshire Department of Education. The workshop has been created in response to the many questions teachers are asking about how to implement and assess the New Hampshire Arts Model Competencies. The day will be a combination of instruction, discovery, learning from each other, disucssion and activity. Emphasis will be placed on applying Universal Design for Learning and multiple modalities as an assessment strategy.  Participants will:

  • Learn what a performance task is and what goes into designing a valid and reliable performance task. 
  • Examine Model Cornerstone Assessments and accompanying student work. 
  • Respond to resources on Universal Design for Learning and arts assessment. 
  • In small groups, discuss main components of a task and analyze tasks to determine what is being measured. 
  • Discuss the difference between scoring tasks and grading tasks, especially for students with individualized learning plans (IEP's)
  • Get tools to help identify rigor and establish alignment of performance tasks. 
  • Learn about New Hampshire Arts PACE work .
  • Practice scoring student work. 
  • Get acquainted with task bank resources from other states. 
  • Ask questions. 
  • Learn from other teachers. 
The workshops, which will support the work of the NH Arts Learning Network, are presented in partnership with the NH Department of Education, the NH State Council on the Arts and the Arts Alliance of Northern NH’s Arts in Inclusive Learning program, provided under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Cost: $85; includes morning coffee & lunch. All are welcome; partial scholarships are available for those for whom the fee is a hardship. No refunds are available for this program - in the event that the presenter needs to cancel the event, your fee will be refunded.

About the Presenter: 

Marcia McCaffrey, Arts Consultant for the NH Department of Education, has 18 years of leadership experience at the state education agency, working with partners and key stakeholders to interpret and implement quality arts education for the state’s public education sector. Marcia is the immediate past president of the State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education (SEADAE) representing SEADAE on the National Coalition for Core Arts Standards (NCCAS) Leadership Team and facilitating meetings for NCCAS during the 3 years of national standards development. She has served as a dance grant panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts, as a national conference presenter on the power of standards and assessment in teaching and learning, as a dance educator for public schools and higher education, as proprietor of a small dance business and as director of a seniors’ dance company. She is also a member of the National Dance Education Organization’s Advisory Board and in that role focuses on curriculum, standards, and assessment for the organization.
