Teaching Artists: Please Join Us for Our Annual Workshop Focused on Successful Inclusion
at All Grade Levels & in All Arts Disciplines

an Arts in Inclusive Learning workshop 

Tuesday, August 29, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Presented by the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire & VSA New Hampshire as part of our Arts in Inclusive Learning collaboration, provided under a contract with the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Our thanks to our partners at the NH Arts Learning Network, the NH State Council on the Arts, NH Department of Education and our hosts at the Kimball Jenkins School of Art.

Teaching Artists are finding more and more that the classes they work with in their residencies and programs include a wide variety of students with physical, emotional and developmental special needs. How can teaching artists successfully plan for so many different ways of learning and so many different levels of engagement and behavior? 

Using Universal Design for Learning, an approach to fully inclusive teaching, participants in this workshop will explore how best to plan for a wide variety of learners in ways that optimize the arts experience for  every student – and for the learning group as a whole.

Guided by master teacher Deborah Stuart, the group will share their own experiences and discuss best practices for teaching artists working with students with different needs. Deborah will lead workshop participants in discussion of challenges that might arise in a variety of situations.

Workshop participants will conside how their lessons can be expanded and strengthened to address specific barriers which might prevent some students from becoming fully engaged or from feeling successful.  TAs attending will have opportunities to share challenges and questions which have arisen in their own work and to engage in discussion, both about what has worked well and about what tools would be helpful in similar situations.
About the Facilitator:
Deborah Stuart, our lead trainer, has worked for over 40 years with children in classrooms and as a teaching assistant with a focus on Universal Design for Learning nationally and internationally. She has done extensive training for educators and was a core faculty member for the VSA Arts Institute: Professional Development in Art, Education and Disability. In 2013 she led one of the national webinars offered by the Department of VSA and Accessibility at the Kennedy Center, and she is the 2014 recipient of the national VSA Ginny Miller Award for Mentorship.
