Beyond Kubler - Ross: Advances in Understanding and Treating Grief and Loss

Catherine Beckett, LCSW, PhD

This training has reached capacity and registration is closed. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Outside of death and taxes, it may be said that loss (and the grief that accompanies it) is perhaps the most inevitable human experience. In the course of our lives, we all experience loss and grief, and as therapists, we are likely to see these issues turn up frequently in our offices. Surprisingly, the majority of mental health professionals report having had little to no training during—or since—graduate school specifically focused on current best practices in working with grief and loss.

This presentation will outline three foundational advances in grief work: the shift from Kubler-Ross’s stage model towards a task model of grieving, the identification of adaptive grieving styles, and the concept of disenfranchised grief. Practical tools and strategies for applying these concepts in work with clients will be emphasized. Finally, the results of the speaker’s research on therapist bias in grief work will be presented.

Join us for a warm breakfast and an opportunity to network with other behavioral health professionals from 8:00 - 9:00 am.
