Presents
THE NEW DEAL and its contributions to the East Bay
Dr. GRAY BRECHIN will discuss the history of the Bay Area’s Depression Era architecture and public artworks, including iconic sites such as Woodminster Amphitheater, the Alameda County Courthouse, the Bay Bridge, and the East Bay Regional Parks. Dr. Brechin will also discuss “The Living New Deal” project, a national registry of the projects that the New Deal and its public spirited workers left to future generations; including post offices, schools, theaters, and parks. Many of these landmarks are disappearing…sold and/or demolished, along with murals and sculptures by New Deal artists.
Dr. Brechin is a historical geographer, author and a popular public speaker. Currently a visiting scholar in the U.C. Berkeley Department of Geography and founder and project scholar of the Living New Deal Project.
