Identification and Preservation of Photographic Collections

Photographic media are ubiquitous within the collections of archives and libraries. From daguerreotypes and color prints to negatives on glass and plastic film, photographic collections require a unique set of knowledge and skills for proper preservation. This workshop is designed to help attendees recognize the most common photographic processes and formats of the 19th and 20th centuries typically found in collections and address their special needs to ensure longevity. Environmental parameters, materials and approaches to storage, and safe handling will be discussed and reinforced through hands-on group activities.  Examples of photographic materials and housing will be available for examination.

This workshop will be presented in five different locations.

Best Practices to Improve Performance

  • All attendees should join the meeting via a hard-wired connection vs Wifi, and remember to turn wireless off on computers, otherwise it will still attempt to use it.
  • All attendees should shut down any background applications such as mail or downloads.
  • All attendees should shut down VPN (Virtual Private Network) if one is running.
  • Enable Webcam for multiple participants judiciously.  If enabling many webcams, use Filmstrip Mode instead of Grid Mode to conserve bandwidth and improve performance.  If sharing a video or screenshare, hide or pause the Webcam while doing so.
  • When sharing videos in your room try to have those on Webcam pause their feed while the video is playing to conserve bandwidth
  • Meeting Preferences > Video and Screen Share should not be not set to high.  Standard is generally sufficient.
  • When hosting large webinars and using VoIP, use the Q&A Pod and Chat Pod for participant communications instead of enabling microphones for all participants.
  • Anyone using a microphone (VoIP) should run the Audio Setup Wizard (Meeting menu).   This includes hosts, presenters and attendees.  This video reviews VoIP Best Practices and using the Audio Setup Wizard: http://www.clarix.com/voip.html
  • USB headsets are always preferred and recommended.  Be sure headsets are plugged in prior to joining the meeting; if they are not, they may not be recognized.  If that happens, plug it in, leave and rejoin the meeting.
  • When using an external microphone, like a webcam or computer mic, feedback is common.  With an open mic and open speakers, sound will loop.  Anyone using an external mic should use earbuds to listen so speaker sound is not picked up by the microphone. Otherwise, they will need to mute themselves when not speaking.
  • On occasion a Participant may log in to a session twice, which can create an echo effect if using VoIP, because two meeting windows are active.  If this happens, remove the first login instance from the Participant list (the login instance with a 2 after it is generally the good one).
  • It’s possible for a network interruption to cause audio interference or skipping for some people using VoIP.  Having them leave and rejoin the meeting will usually resolve it.
