This one-day conference provides information on practical ways to improve outcomes for individuals with FASD across systems of care. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are a spectrum of brain-based developmental disorders that affect many aspects of daily living and last a lifetime. A recent study conservatively estimated that FASD affects as many as 1 in 20 first graders.
Target Audience:
Parents, educators, service providers working in substance use/mental health prevention and treatment programs, people serving the homeless, employers, probation officers, and staff working in the judicial and criminal justice system, judges, police officers, CWS, and anyone involved in the human services field.
Conference Description:
Morning plenary sessions will address the global context of FASD, personal experiences of living with FASD, Minnesota’s efforts to develop FASD-informed services, and a panel comprised of speakers on the afternoon topics below. The conference will close with a plenary session on the basics of advocacy.
Afternoon Session Options:
A1: “Cognitive Supports for People with FASDs.” Nate Sheets, Behavioral Consultant. Children and adults with FASD struggle with many of the cognitive skills that everyday situations require and are often seen as defiant, oppositional, lazy, or unintelligent. This presentation shares the logic of Cognitive Supports™, a model developed by Nate Sheets and provide specific concrete steps and tools to begin using immediately.
A2: “A Pragmatic Approach to Supporting Individuals with FAS and Their Families." Kristine Altweis, Executive Director, Hawaii International Child. This program demystifies assumptions about FAS and introduce pragmatic approaches to working with individuals with FAS and their families.
A3: “Getting Real with FASD in the Courtroom and Beyond.” Michael Jeffery, Superior Court Judge, Retired. Court adaptations to FASD. Methods, barriers, and the legal doctrine of “Procedural Fairness” will be discussed.
B1: “Think Strategies, Not Solutions. Approaches for Educators that Work.” Sara Messelt, Executive Director, Proof Alliance of Minnesota. Based on recent prevalence studies, almost every classroom has at least one student who has FASD. Classroom teachers, paraprofessionals, specialists, and administrators need strategies that will support improved educational outcomes for these students.
B2: “Suggested Improvements for the Interface of FASD Patients and Families with Hawaii’s Health Care System.” Kevin Kunz, MD. Overview of the visible and invisible interactions within health care systems which impact the prevention, identification, early intervention, and chronic care for FASD individuals and families.
B3: “Case Study: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Improve Outcomes for Individuals with FASD in the Court System.” Iwalani Kapika, Parent; Vanessa Mamhot, LMHC; Tia Ikeno, Probation Officer; Jana Moya, LMFT. Panel discussion on a collaborative approach in working to improve the outcomes of treatment, education, and family dynamics, for youth with FASD in the family court system in Hawaii.
