Timmy Larr’s idea from last summer is quickly developing into this year’s most highly anticipated event. Five leading sailing organizations in the Northeast have combined efforts to offer the first ever match racing regatta in the area to sailors with adaptive needs. The event will be held July 15, 16, and 17 in Oyster Bay, New York.

Coach Dave Perry will lead the event with an onshore clinic on match racing and on-the-water coaching throughout. Perry is a current rules advisor for the America’s Cup team Artemis Racing and five time U.S. Match Racing Champion. His books on sailboat racing are widely acknowledged as some of the best teaching tools for developing sailors.

Participating sailors who are interested can get involved in two ways. Teams (consisting of two or more, including skipper) can request an invitation by clicking the link below. Individuals looking for a team can add their name to the crew bank and we will endeavor to place you accordingly. Sailors who may need adaptive equipment should fill out this questionnaire so we can provide it accordingly.

Scholarships are available for travel and housing through The Clagett. Preference is given to applicants 200 miles or more in distance from Oyster Bay, NY. Interested sailors click here for more details on how to apply.

Supporting Organizations:

SailAhead
uses sailing and the ocean as a therapeutic platform to help veterans heal the scars of war. The organization has partnered with the local Northport VA to take veterans sailing year round. They will organize veteran medics and a rescue swimmer for the event.

Warrior Sailing Program Logo

Warrior Sailing is supplying the adaptive equipment to allow the sailors to use the Sonars. Sonar expert Gene Hinkel has spent decades helping US Paralympians and Olympic hopefuls. He will oversee the installation of all necessary adaptive equipment.

The Clagett, a not-for-profit organization, was initiated in 2003 to become the leader in developing competitive sailing opportunities for sailors with adaptive needs and to develop a program that will enable sailors with disabilities to reach their personal levels of achievement.  The organization is sponsoring Coach Perry and supplying scholarship funding for those who qualify for this funding.  They will also provide guidance and support through their extensive experience with adaptive sailing.
