Mental health first aid (MHFA) is the help provided to a person developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis is resolved.

MHFA Canada is a 12-hour course that trains you to recognize the signs and
 symptoms of the following mental health disorders:
•Substance misuse and substance-related disorders
•Mood-related disorders, including depression and bipolar
•Anxiety and trauma-related disorders, including panic attacks and post-traumatic 
stress disorder
•Psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia
 
 The course also trains you on MHFA Canada for the following situations that 
could occur in your organization:
•Overdosing, signs and symptoms, as well as what to do until a healthcare 
professional arrives
•Assisting someone who is at a risk of suicide
•Acute stress reactions including panic attacks and how you can assist
•Psychotic episodes and what you need to know

In addition:

•Reduce the stigma associated with mental health in your workplace, which 
stops many people from seeking the help they need
•Potentially save the life of a loved one, co-worker, or client/customer
•Obtain certification from the Mental Health Commission of Canada that adds 
to your professional development
