Indigo Shibori: A Japanese Dye Workshop

Shibori is the Japanese method of resist dyeing. We will will fold, bind, and sew fabric prior to create beautiful patterns on fabric. Students will learn a variety of folding and binding techniques, and then immerse their pieces into indigo dye vats. Bring 10-15 small/medium fabric items from home to dye that are pre-washed, 100% natural fibers (cotton, wool, silk, hemp, linen) like hand towels, baby onesies, t-shirts, cloth napkins, scarves, etc. Please wear clothes that can get messy and bring a pair of long-cuffed kitchen gloves. All levels welcome!

 

Techniques:

• Participants will learn vocabulary associated with the dyeing process
• Participants will learn a variety folding and binding techniques
• Participants will practice techniques on a piece of sample fabric
• Participants will dye 10-15 small items brought from home
• Participants will take home their handmade shibori pieces
