About the Speaker:
Dr. Mary Elaine Califf is currently serving as the Interim Director of the School of Information Technology at Illinois State University, where she has taught since 1998. After attending high school in Jakarta, she began her college studies in the English department at Baylor University, where she received both a BA and an MA before changing her focus to computing. She stayed at Baylor for an MS in Computer Science, then completed her PhD at the University of Texas at Austin in Computer Sciences in 1998. Dr. Califf’s primary research interests are in natural language processing and machine learning, particularly in applying learning to language processing. Her best known work is in developing rules to extract information from text documents. She has primarily taught programming, algorithms and data structures, and artificial intelligence courses.
