This new virtual workshop introduces the recently developing disease entity of osteosarcopenia. This newly identified musculoskeletal syndrome is the co-existence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia so it is important for PT/OT rehab providers to understand these conditions, related diagnoses, and the wide range of relevant modifiable risk factors.

  • Definitions of osteopenia, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia.
  • Overview including risk factors, pathophysiology, and diagnostics.
  • Current approaches and interventions to optimize muscle and or bone health.
  • Components of the PT/OT evaluation such as functional tests and key pieces of subjective data collection.

By the completion of the workshop you will be able to:

  1. Compare and contrast osteopenia, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, and osteosarcopenia.
  2. Identify risk factors and treatments related to osteosarcopenia.
  3. Cite and apply guidelines for exercise recommendations.
  4. Discuss non-pharmalogical interventions for osteosarcopenia.
