Chrism Mass & Acculturation Day, 2012 

Chrism Mass

The annual Chrism Mass will be held on Thursday, March 29, 2012, at 9:00 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Andrew, follwed by an educational event in the Von Holt Room. All clergy, and their spouses, are invited to both events.

In the Chrism Mass, Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick will bless the oils of chrism, catechumenate, and healing for the year. Clergy are asked to bring their own vials or bottles for carrying the oils back to their congregations. We have quart-size plastic bags for carrying the bottles on airplanes.

Acculturation Day

The educational event will be an Acculturation Day. This event, which is held every two to three years, and the program for which varies, introduces clergy to the cultures they might encounter in Hawai‘i. Its purpose is to help us understand some of the cultural norms here that may be new or unexpected to those coming from outside Hawai‘i. (Such as, Why is someone calling me Aunty? I'm not their aunt. Or, What does "kung hee fat choy" mean?)

Usually the Acculturation Day is especially intended for clergy new to the Diocese. This year all clergy are encouraged to come, as well as spouses. After all, clergy spouses also have to adjust to a new environment. All are invited so that we have a mix of newbies, people born here, and those from elsewhere but who have been around for a while!

Airfare for those on Neighbor Islands will be provided. The event is free, and lunch will be provided. To arrange airfare, please contact Leanne Williams. Airfare has been pre-authorized for all clergy and spouses, as long as you are attending this event.
