Youth Famine Retreat

Assuming it takes you two minutes to read this, forty children under the age of five will have died by the time you have finished. FORTY CHILDREN. And those deaths are from hunger and hunger-related diseases, which is completely preventable. It’s a problem, but The Episcopal Youth of Hawaii have decided to do something about it. They’re doing World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine on April 26 - 28, 2013!

While the problem is huge, the solution is not. It only takes about $30 a month, roughly $1 a day, to feed and care for a child in most developing countries. A mere $360 will provide for those life-saving needs for an entire year. To learn more about World Vision's 30-Hour Famine, visit their website here.

St. George's Episcopal Church will be the site of the diocesan youth retreat that will have participants fast for 30 hours.  As the youth go 30 hours without food, they’ll get a taste of what it’s like to be hungry, all the while reaching out to others in need. And as they do that, their compassion will grow for people around the world, and right here at home.

The retreat is open to all youth in grades 6 - 12.  The registration cost of this retreat is waived, but we ask instead that participants make a donation of $30 towards their own fundraising efforts that will go to fight world hunger. When you register for the event, you will be sent a fundraising packet to collect donations that will help to eradicate world hunger.

To register, click on the link below.  To download the required parent consent forms and guidelines as well as other important information about the retreat, click HERE.  The forms must be completed, signed and brought to the event.  To download the brochure, click HEREDeadline to register is April 10, 2013.

As a group, youth leaders and adminstrators are able to register up to 20 participants at one time through the link below, but the required parent consent forms must still be downloaded and completed for each minor participant.

There may be some travel assistance available for Neighbor Island youth.  Please submit the Youth Travel Scholarship form HERE. For more information about the retreat, or if you have any questions, e-mail Sarah Klitzke, Diocesan Youth Director, or call her at 808-536-7776, ext. 309.
