Empty Bowls 2018

The Episcopal Diocese of Hawai'i and 'Iolani School invite you to join the #PrayFastAct Hunger Campaign* by attending the biennial Empty Bowls event to raise awareness about hunger in Hawai'i.

Thursday, May 3, 2018
4:30 PM Gathering & Non-profit Agency Tables
5:00 PM - Program Begins
'Iolani School, Seto Hall

Our keynote speaker this year is Sara Miles.  Sara is a writer whose books include Take This Bread: A Radical Conversion; Jesus Freak: Feeding Healing Raising the Dead; and City of God: Faith in the Streets. She is the founder and director of The Food Pantry, and served for ten years as Director of Ministry at St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church.

Following her address, we will join together for a simple dinner of soup and bread, student musical performances and student presentations on serving the hungry in our community.

The event is free although donations of food for Aloha Harvest are being requested.  For those attending, there is a Farmer's Market on campus outside Seto Hall every Thursday from 2:30-5:30 PM.  Before the event, you may consider purchasing fresh produce from these vendors and donate it to our Aloha Harvest collection.  We also welcome any produce from your yard.  Most needed food items are:

FRESH VEGETABLES (onions, carrots, celery and potatoes for stews; and lettuce, greens and tomatoes and other fresh vegetables for salads)

FRESH FRUITS (tangerines, apples, bananas, apple-bananas, pineapple, oranges, grapefruits)

NON-PERISHABLES (rice, pasta, peanut butter, jelly, oatmeal, pancake mix, spaghetti, tomato sauce, ground coffee, and canned protein: Spam, tuna and Vienna Sausage)

Parking is available in the 'Iolani School parking structure (entrance on Kamoku Street) on levels 2A and above.  Please see the map in the blue column at left under Driving Directions.

Please register by clicking on the link below.  THE DEADLINE  HAS BEEN EXTENDED! RSVP NOW!

What is Empty Bowls?

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots movement to end hunger and support food security.  Participants share a simple meal of soup and bread, and take home an empty bowl as a reminder that every day, someone goes hungry and a bowl is left empty.

The Hawai'i Potters' Guild held its first Empty Bowls event in 2009, and has grown from the first 700 bowl effort to 5,000 bowls in 2015!  'Iolani School hosted its first Empty Bowls event in 2016, and students make and donate bowls to the biennial Empty Bowls Hawai'i event.

2018 marks the first year that the Episcopal Church in Hawai'i and 'Iolani School will host the event together.

*What is the #PrayFastAct Hunger Campaign?

In May 2017, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry invited all Episcopalians to pray, fast and advocate to protect funding for the hungy and the poor.

  • PRAY for our nation's elected leaders to stand with those who struggle to receive their daily bread.
  • FAST to call attention in our own minds and actions to the plight of hungry and vulnerable people in our nation.
  • ACT by urging our elected leaders to support strong policy solutions that address hunger in our communities.
We #PrayFastAct on the 21st of every month because that is the day that 90% of SNAP benefits (food stamps) run out for families. This means that the last week of the month is usually the hungriest week in America!
