Community Engaged Scholarship Forum 

The Community-Engaged Scholarship Forum, hosted by the Western Transportation Institute, will be held on Thursday, November 14 beginning at 10am in Inspiration Hall.

 Forum Agenda: 

10am-11am:  Pecha kucha

The event will kick off with a pecha kucha. Faculty and students from engineering, landscape design, community health, film, architecture, and geography will showcase (in presentations under 7 minutes) partnership experiences and outcomes when students are purposefully engaged in projects that address community-identified needs. The presenters from multiple MSU colleges and departments will share their experiences with course-based project partnerships that integrate student learning and service to communities.

11am-12pm: Invited speaker presentations

Jane Rogan, Director of the University of Indiana’s ‘Sustaining Hoosier Communities’ (SCP) program, will share information about the successful SCP program, which matches projects identified by small and rural communities to multiple university project-based courses, faculty, and students for maximum impact. Since its inception, SCP has engaged 900 students across 44 projects, for a total of more than 44,000 hours of work in Indiana communities.

Branden Born, Associate Professor of Urban Design and Planning and co-director of the Livable City Year (LCY) Program at the University of Washington, will describe UW’s university-wide community partnership effort that pairs university classes with city staff to complete research and design projects in service to community needs as well as the role of the EPIC-Network of schools participating in similar partnerships, on which he serves as a board member.

12pm-1pm:  Lunch and networking opportunity

The event will conclude with a buffet lunch and opportunity for faculty, staff, and invited community representatives to network.

Faculty are strongly encouraged to share the event invitation and registration link with past and present community partners. 

The forum will highlight opportunities to support all three intentional focus areas in MSU’s Choosing Promise strategic plan -- transformational learning experiences, scholarship that improves lives, and collaboration through mutually beneficial partnerships -- through expanded community-engagement opportunities with local communities.
