TOPIC: Innocent Spouse

Seminar Description: Have you ever had a distraught client who was shocked to learn that they were on the hook for a spouse's or ex-spouse's tax liability? Learn what you can do to help this client through the process of requesting Innocent Spouse Relief.

Learning Objectives:

At the completion of this seminar, participants will be able to:

  •  understand the different types of spousal relief as defined by the Internal Revenue Code
  •  understand what conditions must be met to qualify for innocent spouse relief
  •  understand relief from liability arising from community property law
  •  learn the difference between an innocent spouse and an injured spouse
  •  determine the options available for the non-innocent spouse
  •  understand why and when to file form 8857
  •  recognize innocent spouse conflicts of interest
  •  learn how to successfully manage the innocent spouse client engagement
  •  determine what authority the tax court holds

Jason Daughtry, EA

Jason H. Daughtry is an Enrolled Agent and owner of Affirmative Financial Group LLC located in Mays Landing, NJ. Mr. Daughtry has been in the field of taxation since 1998 and an Enrolled Agent since 2012. His experience involves income tax preparation and tax planning for individuals and businesses but focuses his practice primarily on representing taxpayer’s before the IRS and state taxing authorities. Mr. Daughtry is a National Tax Practice Institute (NTPI) Fellow as well as a financial advisor and New Jersey licensed life insurance provider.
