Mindfulness: Tools to Build Youth Resiliency 

 

Stress is pervasive in the lives of today's youth. Without adequate coping skills, students may engage in risky behaviors and make poor decisions that have negative consequences for themselves and others.This workshop will help those that work with youth to understand the causes and effects of stress in students.    Dr. Tummers will share skills and activities to help students with stress management, cope with current pressures, and reduce future stress.

Dr. Tummers is a professor of health education and kinesiology at Eastern Connecticut State University. She teaches mindfulness, yoga, and stress management to various populations including incarcerated at-risk adolescents, athletes, adults, PreK-12 youth, and many more. Dr. Tummers is the author of Stress Management: A Wellness Approach, and Teaching Stress Management Activities for Children and Young Adults.

Participants will:

  • Recognize the causes and effects of stress in students
  • Understand the benefits and application of mindfulness to learning communities
  • Identify evidence based research that supports mindfulness in learning/working communities
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply mindful practices through demonstration and role playing
