Speaker: Dr. Rick Lavoie served as an administrator of residential programs for children
with special needs for 30 years. He has been a visiting lecturer at numerous universities and has made numerous national television appearances including The TODAY Show, CBS Morning Show, Good Morning America, ABC Evening News, and Walt Disney Presents.

Rick has served as a consultant on Learning Disabilities to several organizations including PBS, New York Times, National Center for Learning Disabilities, USA Today, and Girl Scouts of America, and, in 2009, Rick was the recipient of the Learning Disabilities Association of America’s Samuel Kirk award. Rick’s intensive experiences at residential schools provided him with a “living laboratory” in which he developed and refined his methods and philosophies related to the education of children and adolescents with special needs.

He is the author of the book “It’s So Much Work to Be Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Social Success (Touchstone/ Simon and Schuster, 2005). The book addresses the direct link between learning disabilities and social skills issues that many children face. Rick provides specific strategies for parents, teachers and caregivers about how to assist the child in making and keeping friends.

He has delivered his message to over 500,000 parents and professionals throughout North America, Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong. He has the distinction of having delivered Keynote Addresses for all three of the major special needs advocacy organizations in the United States (Learning Disabilities Association, Council for Exceptional Children, Children with Attention Deficit Disorder).

Most parents and professionals know Rick through his videos "How Difficult Can This Be? The F.A.T.  City Workshop", "Last One Picked, First One Picked On: The Social Implications of Learning Disabilities" and “When the Chips are Down: Learning Disabilities and Discipline”. These classic, award-winning films have brought Rick’s sensitive and compelling message to countless thousands throughout the world and are among the most widely distributed films in the educational media. His newest book and PBS DVD on student motivation “The Motivation Breakthrough: 6 Secrets to Turning On the Tuned-Out Child” (2007) were featured in USA Today.

Topic Summary:
In his thirty years experience leading boarding schools for students with special needs, Rick Lavoie has learned three basic truths.

1. It takes a village to raise a child.  Parents and teachers must work together as a co-equal team in order to help the child reach their fullest potential.

2. The average Canadian child spends around 1100 hours annually in the classroom.  This represents merely 5% of his waking time.  The majority of his time is spent in social settings such as hockey practice, in the neighborhood, and with family and friends.  The self-esteem (and ultimate success!) of the child will be determined by his social interactions and relationships.  Social skills are, simply, more valuable than academic skills.

3. Most strategies and techniques that are effective with “typical” kids simply don’t work with kids with learning disorders. Parents and teachers must develop a repertoire of alternative techniques.

These issues will be explained and demonstrated in this all day workshop which will present 2 interdependent seminars.

Session #1 - Behavioral Strategies that Don’t Work with Struggling Kids…and Some that Do

The seminar will explore common behavior management strategies that often prove ineffective for children with learning problems (e.g., punishment, reward systems, lecturing, grounding, time out).

A series of alternative strategies will be explored. These field-tested techniques enable the child to monitor and control his behavior and enhance his self-esteem. Mr. Lavoie will also explain the dynamics of families with a struggling child. This will enable parents and teachers to understand the challenges of raising a child with special needs.

Objectives Session #1 - Participants will learn:

•  the value of positive feedback and the futility of punishment.
•  ten reasons why punishment is generally ineffective.
•  twelve specific behavior management techniques that can be used at home and in the classroom (Broken Record, minor choice, collective rewards, Poker Chip theory, etc.)
• about the Stages of Acceptance model that families experience when confronting learning disorders.

Session #2 - Understanding the Social Side of Learning Disorders: From Isolation to Acceptance

Of all the frustrations and failures experienced by struggling children, nothing is more painful than the social isolation and rejection that they experience daily. This seminar will explore the myriad ways that learning disorders impact upon social development. Specific strategies will be presented that enable parents, teachers and coaches to foster social development in a variety of settings.

 
Objectives Session #2 - Participants will learn:

•   about the pervasive and generic nature of learning disorders.

•   to understand the concept of Social Contracts.
•   the Social Autopsy technique.
•   about Dysemia (inability to understand non-verbal social signals) and its impact on social behavior.
•   the impact of Hidden Curriculum upon the child’s social acceptance and success.
