Speaker: Sarah Ward, M.S., CCC/SLP Speech and Language Pathologist, Co-Director, Cognitive Connections LLP, Boston has over 25 years of experience in diagnostic evaluations, treatment and case management of children, adolescents and adults with a wide range of developmental and acquired brain based learning difficulties and behavioral problems not limited to but including: Attention Deficit Disorder, Verbal & Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities, Mild ASD, and other Social-Cognitive Learning Disabilities. Her particular interest is in the assessment and treatment of executive function deficits.  Ms. Ward holds a faculty appointment at the Massachusetts General Hospital Institute of Health Professions.

A popular speaker, Sarah is an internationally renowned expert on executive function and presents seminars and workshops on the programs and strategies she has developed with her Co-Director Kristen Jacobsen. Their 360 Thinking Executive Function Program received the Innovative Promising Practices Award from the National Organization CHADD. She has presented to and consulted with over 1200 public and private schools in the United States, Canada and Europe
 

SCHEDULE FOR THE DAY

8:15 AM -  Registration arrival

9:00 am - 9:45 am FUTURE THINKERS: A NEW VIEW OF EXECUTIVE FUNCTION SKILLS
• Gain a new understanding on how children demonstrate executive function skills
and a new perspective on what is meant by the term “executive dysfunction.”
• Learn the 360 Thinking Executive Function Model
• Understand the relationship between motivation and executive control. The premise of executive function therapy and how to ensure strategies generalize.

9:45 am - 10:30 am SELF-REGULATION - Improving self-regulation: Understanding and treating the underlying executive control skills for task motivation, initiation and output.
• Helping children to create futuristic imagination and do a mental dress rehearsal.
Learn how children can think in an organized and flexible way about systems and then self-initiate to manage their clothes, backpack, papers, personal belongings in personal and shared spaces.

10:30 am - 10:45 am Break

10:45 am - 12:00 FOLLOWING ROUTINES, INTIATING TASKS, MAKING TRANSITIONS, DECREASE PROMPTS!
• Increase the independence with which children can self-initiate and fluidly transition from a current task to being prepared for a new task.

12:00 - 1:00 pm Lunch On Your Own

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm TIME AND TASK MANAGEMENT
• Teach children to internally sense the sweep of time, and self monitor to sustain concentration, manage pace and complete tasks in allocated time frames.
• Teach children to create and stick to time markers; identify and manage time robbers.
• Show children the process of how to plan homework and long term projects that lasts more than an hour, or must be completed over days and or weeks. Helping children to plan and effectively utilize time in a resource room/learning skills/homework center.

2:00 pm - 2:30 pm THE GET READY *DO* DONE MODEL
• The Get Ready * Do * Done program teaches children the process of how to visualize simple, multi-step, and complex tasks and assignments and then sequence and plan the requisite steps to fully complete work.
• Teach children how to break down complex task and assignments and then plan for, organize, intitate, complete and close out tasks.

2:30 pm - 2:45 pm Break

2:45 pm - 4:00 CLOSING THE HOMEWORK CIRCLE AND LONG TERM PROJECT MANAGEMENT 

  • Innovative techniques for teaching children to adopt a mindful approach to record, bring home, complete and return assignments in a timely manner.
  • The homework space: learn tricks for supporting children and their families in creating a positive and productive environment for homework.
  • Long term projects are a challenge for children with executive dysfunction as they struggle to see into the future to plan ahead for completing the smaller parts of the project.
  • Learn how to help students visually break down large projects into smaller steps, to estimate time to complete and schedule these steps, to visually learn the impact of procrastination and to prioritize steps of the project.
