ICCER Networking Event: Keeping Seniors Safe
Join us as we kick off Seniors' Week! We will have presentations about the Age-Friendly Calgary initiative, Calgary Community Paramedic Program, and Elder Abuse Awareness. Our speakers will share how they work towards improving the safety of seniors in our communities, including those in care, and how we can use this knowledge in everyday practice. Participants will have the opportunity to connect with our speakers, as well as collaborate with one another in small and large group discussion. See more about our speakers below!
This Networking Event is suitable for all levels of staff, as well as family members! We encourage you to share the event information with family members you think would be interested in attending the event. Family members of ICCER member organizations are considered ICCER members and can register for free!

2:10 - 3:00 PM - Age-Friendly Calgary presented by Raynell McDonough
Raynell McDonough is a Strategist with Calgary Neighbourhoods at the City of Calgary. She is currently leading the implementation of the cross-departmental, community-wide Age-Friendly Calgary initiative to prepare for an aging population. Raynell holds a BA in Religious Studies from McGill University, and a BSW and MSW with a concentration in gerontology from the University of Calgary. She has been working in the field of gerontology in Calgary for the past 16 years.

3:10 - 4:00 PM - Community Paramedics: Mobile Medicine in Your Home presented by Tracy Stewart and Roisin Byrne
Tracy Stewart has been with the Community Paramedic Program since its inception in September 2012. Prior to entering the EMS field, she worked as a health care aide on a dementia unit. Tracy worked in EMS for 20 years before pursuing a role in the development of community paramedicine in Calgary. Having been on both sides of providing care to seniors, she knows the value of patients being cared for in their own homes. Currently, Tracy is the South Zone Team Lead for the Community Paramedic Program - Assess Treat and Refer Coordination Desk. This team works with multiple partners in coordinating referrals, ensuring the patient receives the most appropriate care, while supporting the Community Paramedics who are providing mobile acute care in the community.
Roisin Byrne was born and raised in Calgary and has been working within EMS for the past 6 years. For the past 3 years, Roisin has been with the Community Parademic Program. Currently she is an acting Team Lead specializing in palliative care, geriatrics, and staff development. Roisin strongly believes in supporting patients and their families in the community, while working with other agencies to provide the care required to keep patients in the comfort of their homes. In her spare time, Roisin deeply believes in personal wellbeing; she enjoys hiking and adventuring with her dog.

4:10 - 5:00 PM - Elder Abuse Awareness presented by Sharon Janzen
Sharon Janzen is a passionate advocate for the health and well-being of seniors. Volunteering at the Bethany Care Centre in Cochrane gave Sharon a perspective on the treatment of seniors, both mentally and physically. As a graduate of Carya community development initiatives, Elder Service Corps, some of Sharon's accomplishments are as follows:
- Elder Service Corps - Created an ongoing conversation cafe for elders at senior's residence, which discusses relevant topics of interest to them.
- Our Relationship with Money - Increasing financial literacy while collaborating with peers towards a community-based project.
- Senior's Dignity Conversation Cafes - Facilitated discussions between seniors and health professionals/students, in support of the prevention and awareness of elder abuse.
- Golden Hands Project - An initiative to match seniors with accredited professionals to assist with basic home repairs.
Sensitive to the mobility needs of others, Sharon provided transportation for friends and family so they could attend appointments, attend events, and run errands. Creative outlets for Sharon include clothing design and alterations.
