Palliative & End of Life Care in Continuing Care 

The Institute for Continuing Care Education & Research (ICCER) is pleased to offer an education opportunity for all levels of staff, as well as faculty, students, and family members involved in continuing care.

We will have a range of knowledgeable speakers discussing a variety of topics related to palliative and end of life care in a continuing care setting. See the agenda below for more information on our speakers and their presentations! 

Speakers will be presenting from both Edmonton and Calgary sites (ECHA 2-140 [SOLD OUT] and Faculty of Rehab Med, U of A Calgary Campus room 320). There is no cost to attend at either host site. Because there is no cost to attend at host sites, no refreshments or lunch will be provided.

To accommodate those who'd like to attend in a larger space, we have booked a second room in Edmonton Clinic Health Academy (4-001) to view the presentations via webinar.

Registration is also available to attend via Zoom webinar! We encourage those participating via webinar to watch with a group to promote discussion. There is a cost of $75/site for non-members to attend via Zoom webinar. There is no cost for ICCER organizational* and individual members.

9:30 - 10:15 AM - What can we learn from The 5 Wishes? An exploration of the ethics of Palliative and End of Life Care - Katherine Duthie

Katherine Duthie is the Clinical Ethicist for the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the North Zone in Alberta Health Services. She is also a consultant on ethical issues in health technology assessment (HTA), and works regularly with HTA organizations in Canada. Prior to joining AHS in 2015, Katherine was the Leader in Clinical Ethics with the Fraser Health Authority in BC. She completed her doctorate in Public Health with a focus on the intersection between clinical and organizational ethics in 2014. In addition, she has a background in philosophy, policy, and biology.

10:15 - 11:00 AM - Health Care Aide Competencies for Palliative/End of Life Care - Brenda Slobozian

Brenda Slobozian is a Quality Practice Leader with Bethany Care Society, specializing in palliative and end of life care. Over almost three decades, she has been involved in the delivery of palliative care, spanning acute care, long-term care, and community settings. Brenda served on the Board of Directors of the Manitoba Hospice and Palliative Care Association for several years. She is a Registered Nurse and holds a Masters of Nursing degree from the University of Manitoba, where her studies were focused on population health and palliative care. Brenda's current area of focus is related to strengthening a palliative approach within long-term care.

11:15 AM - 12:00 PM - One Organization's Approach to Palliative Care Support & Training - Sandra Cook Wright (RN, MHS, CHPCN(c))

Sandra Cook Wright has been a staff nurse for many years with a wide variety of experience (medicine, surgery, vascular, and palliative). She has also been a manager of a surgical unit, a hospice, and the IPCU at Foothills Hospital. Sandra considers herself a "late bloomer" and went to school to obtain her BN and Master's in Health Studies through Athabasca University. She also has her hospice/palliative certification through CNA. End of life care has always been Sandra's passion, even before the word "palliative" came into existence. Her present role is a pain/palliative consultant for 3 sites within Carewest, and a hospice educator and general educator for end of life/pain/palliative concerns with Carewest.

1:00 - 1:45 PM - Medical Assistance in Dying in Alberta: Two Years After Bill C-14 - Dr. Douglas Faulder

Dr. Faulder is currently Medical Director for Continuing Care in the Edmonton Zone for Alberta Health Services. He also chaired the Alberta Continuing Care Expert Panel on Medical Assistance in Dying and then became Medical Lead for the MAID Care Coordination Team for Edmonton and Northern Alberta.
