Lessons learned: Nonprofit leadership resumes webinar

Every year, The Charitable Advisors team supports 15-20 nonprofit boards in recruiting new ED/CEOs. That translates to reviewing about a thousand resumes each year, a couple hundred screening interviews, and dozens of meetings and conversations with nonprofit board leaders. Let’s just say we’ve seen it all – or most of it.

Whether you are in the market for a new leadership position right now or want to sharpen your resume- and job-hunting skills for the future, we invite you to join the Charitable Advisors team to hear what we have learned and ask your questions.

As part of the session, we would like to feature some actual resumes as examples that we can talk through. If you are open to the Charitable Advisors team using your resume as an illustration in the webinar, please forward it to Kathleen@CharitableAdvisors.com

Internal agenda

  • Introduce our Nonprofit Job board and note how people can tell if it is a CA search
  • Introduce the Nonprofit Job Seeker resource on CA’s website
  • Trends we are seeing in leadership opportunities and transitions (diversity, age, retirements, tenures, transitions from business, etc)
  • Highlights of strong resumes (easy to scan, results over responsibilities, tweaked to fit the position, limited buzzwords, no/few gaps, custom cover letter, emphasis – how can I help this organization?)
  • Problems with poor resumes (length/academics, design over content, too many activities, generic resume and cover letter (wrong co name), unexplained gaps, emphasize – how will this job fulfill me?)
  • Identifying whether this is an organization you want to work for (talking with people associated with the organization, on-line research (Guidestar.org)
  • Etiquette advice on best practice for following up on your application
  • Red flags to look for in a search process (poor communication, long or frequent delays, not willing to share any organizational information with final candidates, etc)
  • Preparing for the interview
  • Q&A
