Beyond Kale and Pedicures: What Organizations & Individuals Can Do to Manage Vicarious Trauma
Francoise Mathieu, M. Ed., RP, CCC
Author of The Compassion Fatigue Workbook
TRAINING DESCRIPTION
2015 marked the 20th anniversary of the publication of Charles Figley's pioneering book "Compassion Fatigue" which explored the potentially negative impact of trauma exposure on helping professionals.
Since then, the field of Compassion Fatigue (CF) and Vicarious Trauma (VT) has grown exponentially, and new research has emerged suggesting effective ways for helping professionals to sustain and protect themselves. New findings indicate that in order to reduce compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma, we need to adopt a multi-pronged approach -- self care, hot baths, and company picnics are simply NOT enough.
Organizations must embed practices to promote staff self-care in their system culture. At the same time, helpers have responsibility for attending to their own well-being. It is an ethinical imperative -- for workers themselves, the people they serve, and the community in which they live.
This presentation will review what's new and what works to reduce the cost of caring and offer three keys tools for best practice for front line workers, and managers.
After this presentation, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the newest research findings in reducing/managing CF and VT.
2. Apply 3 key tools for their practice - as managers and front line providers.
3. Explore new directions for future research.
