Treating Traumatic Bereavement

Training Description

Traumatic bereavement refers to the loss reactions that occur after a sudden, violent, and untimely death - think death stemming from a violent crime, car accident, sudden heart attack, or accident. Traumatic bereavement often results in a combination of trauma and grief that interferes with survivors’ ability to lead meaningful and productive lives. So often treatment providers will treat either the trauma or the grief, but not both, nor will they address the way that grief and trauma are intertwined. This workshop brings together best practice about healing trauma and healing from grief and loss.

Dr. Pearlman, lead author of the book Treating Traumatic Bereavement: A Practioner's Guide, will discuss the phenomenon of traumatic bereavement as well as an integrated treatment approach that weaves together resource building, trauma processing, and mourning processes.

Presenter

Laurie Anne Pearlman, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and internationally renowned expert in the field of psychological trauma. She has devoted her career to promoting the understanding of traumatic stress, its impact on survivors and those who work with survivors. In 1990, she and Dr. Lisa McCann coined the term vicarious traumatization and did the seminal writing that launched the concepts so widely accepted today.  She is an original author of the Risking Connection curriculum and an RC Faculty Trainer. She is the lead author on the 2014 book Treating Traumatic Bereavement: A Practitioner's Guide.
