Rescheduled - RC Trainer Consult Group - April 24, 2018

The Importance of Fathers and Male Caregivers

in Healing Trauma Survivors

with John Engel and Steve Brown, Psy.D.

Training Description

Our March RC Consult Group was rescheduled due to a winter storm.  If this new date works better for you than the last, why not join us?

Why are fathers and male caregivers so absent in the treatment of children in our agencies?  Sometimes it’s because there are few men in our clients’ lives. Sometimes men are the perpetrators of violence for which our clients are seeking treatment. But even when there ARE important male figures in the lives of the clients we serve, they often stay away from our programs.

In this RC Trainer Consult, we will explore these behaviors and circumstances by considering some familiar RC questions: What happened (to these fathers and men) that explains their behavior? How do we as treaters (and agencies) contribute to and reinforce such behavior? The answers to these questions will help us identify attitudes and practices for being more father/male-inclusive in our delivery of trauma-informed care.

Join us for the first RC Trainer Consult Group of 2018.

Learning Outcomes Include:

  • Increased understanding of trends, benefits and barriers to father/male caregiver engagement
  • Increased understanding of how our own father/male caregiver experience informs our professional father/male caregiver experience
  • Increased understanding of how our agencies may present barriers to father engagement
  • Strategies for increasing father/male caregiver engagement in professional settings

John Engel is a Program Coordinator for the Traumatic Stress Institute. John approaches the topic of fatherhood through multiple roles, including: 1) An engaged father and co-parent of an 8-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter, 2) Writer of ’The Fatherhood Journey’ column, which includes 72 monthly columns--and counting--in the Daily Hampshire Gazette, 3) Executive Director of MERGE for Equality, which promotes healthy masculinity and male engagement in gender equality, and 4) a trauma informed care trainer for the Traumatic Stress Institute.

Steve Brown, Psy.D., is the Director of the Traumatic Stress Institute of Klingberg Family Centers and Coordinator of the Risking Connection Training Program.  He trains professionals nationally on psychological trauma, trauma-informed care, and youth with sexual behavior problems.  In addition to being a psychologist, he is a long-time sexuality educator/trainer and author of Streetwise to Sex-Wise: Sexuality Education for High Risk Youth, a sexuality education curricula used internationally by agencies and schools serving high risk youth.
