What Does the Data Say? How Do We Address the Challenges? How Can We Become Change Agents in Our Organizations?

Training Description

This webinar will discuss the wide array of challenges that Black adolescent girls face as they strive to negotiate the rocky waters of adolescence and transition to young adulthood. Findings drawn from community collaborations and data sharing point to: inequities Black girls face in the child welfare system, widespread childhood adversity and trauma, and biases related to the “adultification” of this population.

Using the example of two-Pittsburgh-based agencies, the Black Girls Equity Alliance and Gwen’s Girls, the webinar will provide examples of how these organizations have systematically addressed the challenges for Black girls through trauma-informed clinical services, gender specific programming, a school-based educational curriculum, professional training, and advocacy.

Presenters

Kathi Elliott, DNP, MSW, CRNP – Executive Director, Gwen’s Girls, Inc. (Pittsburgh, PA)

Dr. Elliott is the Executive Director of Gwen’s Girls, Inc., a community-based non-profit organization in Pittsburgh whose mission is to empower girls and young women to have productive lives through exposure to holistic, gender-specific programs, education, and experiences. She has a passion to research and delivers holistic care that is evidence-based and strengthens girls, their families, and the wider community.

Dr. Elliott holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice from Chatham University and a Masters degrees in Nursing and Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh. She has over 20 years of experience in social service and community and individual mental health treatment. Her career began as a victim advocate at the Center for Victims, working mostly inthe juvenile justice system. 

Dr. Elliott currently serves on the Board of Trustees at Chatham University, as well as Robert Morris University’s Sociology/Criminal Justice Advisory Board and Slippery Rock University’s Criminology Advisory Board.

Angela Y. Steele, MSW – Diversity and Inclusion Officer, Allegheny County Department of Human Services, Office of Children, Youth and Family Services (Pittsburgh, PA)

 Angela Y. Steele, MSW began her career as a direct service child welfare caseworker. Angela remained in direct service for 13 years, holding positions in various aspects of casework. Through participation in the Child Welfare Data Leadership Fellows program, she gain expertise in using data to influence casework practice. Using her  casework experience and data analysis background, Angela works as the Diversity and Inclusion Officer for Allegheny County Children, Youth and Family Services where she specializes in racial equity, sexual orientation gender identity and expression (SOGIE), and work with immigrant and international populations.
