14th Annual RC Day of Learning and Sharing - October 13, 2020

Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness: Practices for Sustaining Trauma-Informed Care

Training Description

Becoming trauma-informed treaters and agencies is both rewarding and difficult. And, as the Risking Connection community understands, the occupational hazards of stress, burn-out and vicarious trauma threaten the ability of treaters and organizations to sustain TIC over the long-term.

Trauma-sensitive mindfulness (TSM) offers a promising set of principles and practices that are compatible with trauma-informed care and the Risking Connection model. By fostering present moment awareness of one’s thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations, TSM can promote self-regulation, expand the window of tolerance, increase self-compassion (an important antidote to vicarious trauma), and much more.

This daylong training will provide an overview of trauma-sensitive mindfulness and the growing evidence-base for the benefits of mindfulness in the workplace, with direct implications for use with the RC trauma framework. The morning will include a presentation on the growing evidence-base of the benefits of mindfulness and implications for the Risking Connection community. The morning will also include partner and small group conversations linked to the presentation. In the afternoon, participants will be invited to engage in a range of mindfulness practices and will be able to choose from a number of options such as sitting and walking meditation, compassion meditation, yoga, and more. Mindfulness practice modifications that promote personal safety and racial equity, as well as resist re-traumatization, will be highlighted. Small and larger group discussions will be aimed at exploring ways that mindfulness practices can be integrated into the workplace to both help sustain TIC organizational change efforts and empower staff to thrive in the challenging environment of trauma treatment.

Presenter

John Engel, MA, Program Coordinator at the Traumatic Stress Institute of Klingberg Family Centers, will serve as the lead facilitator, and will be joined by co-facilitators who will lead a variety of mindfulness practice sessions. John has maintained an on-again, off-again mindfulness practice for the past 25-years and formerly served on the faculty at Naropa University, where he taught leadership courses that were infused with mindfulness practice and thought.  More recently, John participated in the virtual Mindfulness at Work Summit, in 2018 and 2019, as well as the 6th Annual Mindful Leader Summit in Washington, D.C., which have inspired John to think deeply about the potential benefits of mindfulness for the Risking Connection community.
