14th Annual RC Day of Learning & Sharing

Mindfulness: The Inner Work of Racial Healing
and Trauma-Informed Care

Training Description

This year we have big changes for the Day of Learning and Sharing:

  • The event will be bookended by two acclaimed keynote presenters in the global mindfulness movement: Jenée Johnson and David Treleaven
  • For the first time, this event will be convened virtually--on our new Zoom platform.
  • We are inviting the Traumatic Stress Institute’s entire North American Risking Connection community – more than 500 Local and Distant RC Associate Trainers, Champions, and Faculty!

Participants will engage in rich community-building activities, learn about the cutting-edge neuroscience of mindfulness, gain insight about how to make mindfulness trauma-sensitive, understand the important role of mindfulness in anti-racism work, and discover how mindfulness can expand the collective healing power of our growing Risking Connection community.

At a time when our nation is in much need of healing – from the stress and trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic to the suffering and destruction caused by historical and ongoing racial trauma – this event will inspire and empower RC Trainers and treaters to promote the hope and healing we all so deeply desire.

In the morning keynote, embedded trauma trainer, public health expert, and mindfulness innovator Jenée Johnson will inspire and invite us to expand ourselves and our capacity for connection. Jenée will share her rich personal and professional experiences to help us:

  • Locate trauma-informed healing – including racial trauma – in a nest of mindfulness
  • Stay in connection and relationship with ourselves and others
  • Be present in mind, body and surroundings through awareness practices
  • Cultivate kindness, curiosity, and inquiry to build emotional intelligence
  • Engage in movement & music, sitting meditation and loving kindness practices

In the afternoon keynote, drawing on a decade of research and clinical experience, educator and trauma professional David Treleaven will teach us how to minimize the potential dangers of mindfulness for trauma survivors and leverage the powerful benefits for healing trauma. Making the direct connections between
trauma-sensitive mindfulness principles and the RC Trauma Framework, David will offer insights and lead us in practices to help us:

  • Stay in and widen the window of tolerance
  • Shift attention to avoid the fear/immobility cycle
  • Use mind and body awareness to work with dissociation
  • Create safety by practicing in relationship
  • Understand social context to work effectively across differences

Presenters

Morning Keynote:

Jenée Johnson is a Program Innovation Leader for Mindfulness, Trauma and Racial Equity, with the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH), where she focuses on the impact of trauma and stress on the 9,000 member SFDPH workforce and the communities they serve. Her work aims to integrate mindfulness to manage change, promote resilience and cultivate a compassionate organizational culture at SFDPH. Prior to her current role, Jenée served as the Director of the San Francisco Black Infant Health Program for 15 years, and is well versed in racial health disparities and social determinants of health. Jenée is also the Founder of The Right Within Experience, an experiential mindfulness program that reclaims humanity, joy, and wellbeing for people of African ancestry. These are the human rights and exalted emotions that are eroded in Black lives through the consistent exposure to the trauma of racism. The Right Within Experience acknowledges the ancient African origins of mindfulness and increases access and relevance to people of African ancestry. Jenée’s outstanding work was featured in the cover story for the October 2019 issue of Mindful Magazine (photo above) and she will be featured in the Fall 2020 issue of Mindfulness Magazine as a Powerful Woman in the Mindfulness Movement.  Learn more about Jenée at https://www.jeneejohnson.com/.

Afternoon Keynote:

David Treleaven, PhD, is an acclaimed writer, educator, and trauma professional whose work focuses on the intersection of mindfulness and trauma. He is author of the acclaimed book Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness: Practices for Safe and Transformative Healing (Norton, 2018), which debuted as a #1 New Release on Amazon. Utilizing contemporary research to inform best practices, David has offered workshops on trauma-sensitive mindfulness at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, and keynote speeches at the Omega Institute in New York, the New Zealand College of Clinical Psychology in Auckland, and the Institute for Mindfulness in South Africa. Trained in counseling psychology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, he received his doctorate in psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies and is currently a visiting scholar at Brown University. David is also the Founder of the Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness (TSM) Community — a group committed to setting a standard of care within mindfulness-based practices, interventions, and programs. Through workshops, keynotes, podcasts, and online education, David focuses on offering mindfulness providers with the knowledge and tools they require to meet the needs of those struggling with trauma. He is passionate about connecting his audience with on-the-ground experts, and is closely engaged with current empirical research to inform best practices.
