As part of the Mental Health/Disabilities Learning Community, we are providing you the opportunity to meet three times annually for peer-to-peer professional development and networking as well as to share resources. The intended audience is Mental Health/Disabilities team members and specialists.
"Rethinking Strategies for Working with Traumatized Children"
Children who are constantly exposed to traumatic events are left feeling powerless and in an ongoing state of danger - prompting the fight or flight response. How is learning possible? How are attachments with Head Start staff possible? In this special Mental Health / Disabilities Learning Community, two speakers unravel the complexities of trauma in young children and how mental health experts can help Head Start staff work more effectively with them and their families.
Erin Werth, Coordinator, Infant and Toddler Treatment Court, Genesee County
For the past 10 years, Erin Werth has overseen a specialized Genesee County Court docket to provide infant mental health services for infants and toddlers in substantiated cases of abuse and/or neglect. One of several "Baby Courts" in Michigan, its goal is to reunify families with children in foster care. As the Opioid Crisis impacts more families with children in foster care, Werth will share important strategies for supporting families in crisis. Aside from her professional experiences, she is also the mother of three children she adopted from foster care.
Brianne Twombly, Supervisor, Infant Mental Health Program, Starfish Family Services
Despite the use of various responsive curricula in recent yeas, disruptive classroom behaviors are growing as are the use of emergency restraints. Reports of teacvher burn-out are on the rise as Head Start agencies see more and more traumatic stress among children. Against this backdrop, we hear from Starfish Family Services' Brianne Twombly as she details their implementation of Trauma Smart initiatives. These practice-bae, cutting-edge science and tested therapies are enhancing Starfish's unique integration of early chldhood education and mental health services to address trauma in the classroom.

Morning coffee and lunch is included with each meeting.
Parking Information: Free outdoor parking is available adjacent to the University Club of MSU.
Overnight Information: Candlewood Inn and Suites is attached to the University Club of MSU and can provide a conference rate. Please let them know you are attending a conference at the University Club of MSU.
