WHO IS THE NEED PROJECT?

The NEED Project designs and delivers teacher-tested educational materials, evaluation techniques and tools, recognition of student achievement, and professional development for educators. NEED materials and training programs provide comprehensive, objective information about the scientific concepts of energy and the sources of energy – their use and their impact on the environment, the economy and society.

Pre-Workshop Independent Work:  Home Energy Audit

Using the Kilowatt meter provided teachers will audit 5 appliances in their home and populate data on a shareable google document. Data populated into google documents.

Meet your fellow participants and the sponsors of today’s workshop. Review goals and objectives for the workshop and begin planning ways to use the NEED materials and training in your school. Learn more about the forms of energy while experimenting with the NEED Project’s Science of Energy kit. Kits will be made available to participating teachers.

 10:40 a.m.          Massachusetts Electric and Energy Connections

After learning about the forms of energy, discover how the different energy sources contribute to the generation of electricity in Massachusetts.  Check out the Massachusetts numbers for all energy use too.

11:10 a.m.          Introduction to Energy Efficiency and Conservation

How do you use energy in your daily life at school? Learn how energy is consumed and easy steps you and your students can take to reduce energy use at home and at school.   Introduce Energy House Challenge

 12:00 p.m.          Integrating Energy Efficiency and Conservation in Language Arts

Using a series of prompts from Energy Games and Icebreakers participants put on virtual skits.

 12:30 p.m.          Break and gather props

 12:40 p.m.          Presentations!

 1:20 p.m.        Insulation Investigation, Air Infiltration and Energy Audit Tools

Learn about thermal insulators, air infiltration in doors and windows and an introduction to the tools provided in the NEED Efficiency and Conservation Kits to explore energy use at home and at school. 

 2:20 p.m.            Teaching Energy Today

Hints, Tips and Tools for teaching energy in today’s classroom (virtually or together).
