NAMC and 2015 TMS Spring Meeting
Registration and Information

The Masonry Society (TMS) will host the 12th North American Masonry Conference, May 17 to 20, 2015, at the University of Colorado Denver and will be preceded by TMS’s 2014 Spring Meeting (May 13-17) at the Springhill Suites hotel on the Auraria Campus, adjacent to the university buildings used for the NAMC. The NAMC Conference series provides a forum for the exchange of scientific, engineering, architectural, construction, evaluation, and repair information on masonry structures. The program will include technical paper sessions and panel discussions; all supplemented with great social events. Over 150 papers have been submitted from 26 countries around the world. Topics of high interest are seismic performance, materials and material properties, testing, historic preservation, design, and structures. Special sessions on masonry arch bridge evaluation and repair are also planned.

Pre & Post Conference Tours

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park
Pre-conference Tour
Sunday May 17, 8:30AM - 4:30PM
$125 per person

Colorado's No. 1 attraction is 75 miles from Denver and offers an unforgettable trip into the heart of the Rocky Mountains. More than 350 miles of trails meander to valleys of wildflowers, thundering waterfalls, high alpine lakes and craggy, snowcapped peaks.

Tour Notes: On this informative and enjoyable tour, we’ll drive north through Boulder on your way to Rocky Mountain National Park, one of America’s premier national treasures. You’ll have the opportunity to stroll around snow covered Bear Lake, which was carved out and dammed by glaciers long ago. As we drive through the park, you may see herds of elk grazing on rich grasses in Moraine Park and incredible mountain views at Many Parks Curve. The destructive force of Mother Nature can easily be seen while walking around an alluvial fan in Horseshoe Park.

Tour cost is not included in registration fees. Transportation to and from the SpringHill Suites Hotel will be provided along with a box lunch. Attendees may wish to bring snacks, water bottles, and sunscreen. Casual clothes, in layers, including a jacket is recommended as cooler temperatures and snow are likely in the mountains. TMS 402/602 members should be advised that this tour occurs concurrently with the Main Committee meeting – thus you cannot attend this tour if you are a Member of the Masonry Committee or plan to attend that meeting.

Optional Spouse/Guest Programs

Boulder Walking Tour
Monday, May 18, 2015 9:00AM - 4:00PM
$75.00

“The Rocky Mountain city of Boulder, Colorado is located twenty-five miles northwest of Denver and is home to some of the most breathtaking natural beauty in the United States. Boulder sits at 5,430 feet above sea level. The area was first settled when prospectors came with dreams of riches to Red Rocks at the mouth of Boulder Canyon. The city was founded in 1859 and officially named the 'Boulder City Town Company”.

A bus will pick up at Springhill Suites at 9:00 am and drive west to the city of Boulder. We will join a tour guide at 10 am in downtown Boulder or Chautauqua Park for a two-hour tour of the Park or downtown.

“Key to community, Boulder’s Chautauqua is one of the few remaining Chautauqua sites in the nation ~ and the only continuously operating Chautauqua west of the Mississippi. Emerging from a cultural movement of the late 19th century, the Chautauqua represents Boulder’s original land purchase on behalf of community – in 1898!”

The afternoon can be spent having lunch at the Chautauqua Dining Hall followed by a hike from one of the many trailheads in the park. Alternatively the afternoon can be spent in downtown Boulder lunching and shopping on the Pearl Street Mall or walking along the beautiful Boulder Creek.

** We can offer a choice of 2 different tours – one of downtown Boulder or one of Chautauqua depending on the number of people who sign up and the interests of the group.
The bus will depart from Chautauqua Park or downtown Boulder at 3:00 pm
Cost for the bus and tour: $75.00 per person

Georgetown Train and Silver Mine Tour
Tuesday, May 19, 2015 9:00AM – 4:00PM
$75.00

Ride to Remember
The beauty of the rugged Rocky Mountains surrounds you as our old-time steam locomotive or our powerful diesel locomotive winds up the Clear Creek canyon. Pass by remains of gold and silver mines and breathtaking views along the line, in fully enclosed cars.

A bus will pick up at Springhill Suites at 9:00 am and drive into the mountains to the historic town of Georgetown. The train tour, including a walking tour of the Lebanon Silver Mine will take about 2 1/2 hours. Seating will be in heated covered cars.

After the tour there will be time to have lunch and shop or wander through the art galleries in downtown Georgetown.

“Georgetown was founded in 1859 during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush by George and David Griffith, two prospectors from Kentucky. It was named "Georgetown" in honor of the older of the two brothers. Although founded during the gold rush, the town grew rapidly following the discovery of silver on September 14, 1864. Georgetown was a historic center of the mining industry in Colorado during the late 19th century, earning the nickname the "Silver Queen of Colorado".

The bus will leave Georgetown at 3:00 pm.
Cost for the bus and train tour: $75.00 per person, not including lunch or tips.

Brown Palace Hotel Tour
Wednesday, May 20, 2015 10:00AM – Noon
$10.00

“The distinguished Brown Palace Hotel & Spa has been open every day since Aug. 12, 1892. Many changes have taken place over the years, but one thing remains the same - the grandeur and grace of one of Denver's most elegant hotels.”

The Brown Palace Hotel is located a little over a mile from the Springhill Suites. The walk or drive will take us through a small part of Denver’s historic downtown. There will be a guided tour of the historic hotel which has hosted US Presidents and dignitaries (Cost $10). After touring the Brown Palace, the group may elect to walk back through Larimer Square.

“Larimer Square is an area as rich in history as it is in fine shopping and dining. As the Mile High City’s oldest and most historic block, its buildings tell vividly the story of the birth and early years of Denver. The city block of Larimer Square housed Denver’s first bank, bookstore, photographer, and dry goods store. The block was also the site of Denver’s first post office (where Nest is currently located) as well as the site of the first theater (in the Lincoln building where the store Eve is now located.)”

OPTIONAL AFTERNOON ACTIVITY.
Following the Brown Palace Hotel tour, conference attendees could join their spouses/guests at High Tea in the elegant lobby of the Brown Palace Hotel. High Tea is $31 - $50 per person.

Conference Proceedings

Registered Conference Attendees will receive an electronic copy of the 12th NAMC Proceedings upon Check-in.
