The Writer's Journey: Publishing Outside of Your Genre

Writers are accustomed to travelling a long and often twisting path on their voyage to publication, and along the way most find a distinct voice and settle into a comfort spot. They find a genre—a home—that showcases their strengths and minimizes their weaknesses, and that is where they tend to stay. Sometimes, though, writers have the urge to venture into new territory and push the boundaries of their body of work.

In this entertaining and informative workshop, Raymond L. Atkins discusses the pros and cons of crossing the genre line and offers useful strategies and proven tips to help make the journey a successful one. From writing to publishing to marketing, Atkins addresses the details that will make or break a writer’s decision to leave the box.

Two-time Georgia Author of the Year and Ferrol Sams Award-winning novelist Raymond L. Atkins offers a lighthearted change of pace in his newest book, South of the Etowah: A View from the Wrong Side of the River. In this collection of humorous essays, Atkins explores a diverse range of topics as seen from the porch of his home on the southern bank of the mighty Etowah River in northern Georgia.

Raymond L. Atkins resides in Rome, Georgia, where he is an instructor of English at Georgia Northwestern Technical College. He lives on the banks of the Etowah River in an old house with a patient wife and a fat dog. His hobbies include people-watching, reading, and watching movies that have no hope of ever achieving credibility. His first novel, The Front Porch Prophet, was published by Medallion Press in 2008 and was awarded the Georgia Author of the Year Award for First Novel. His second novel, Sorrow Wood, was published by Medallion Press in 2009. His third novel, Camp Redemption, was released by Mercer University Press in 2013 and was awarded the Ferrol Sams Award for Fiction and the 2014 Georgia Author of the Year Award for Fiction. His fourth novel, Sweetwater Blues, is a Townsend Prize nominee. South of the Etowah, his first creative non-fiction book, will be released by Mercer University Press in March of 2016.
