Lifelines Training-Intervention

WHAT IS IT?

Lifelines Intervention is designed to facilitate intervention with and referral of potentially at-risk students by school counselors and mental health staff. It provides an assessment and referral process, specifically addressing the impact of student developmental level on the way in which assessment questions are presented in elementary, middle and high schools. Lifelines recognizes that although schools are not mental health facilities, the skillful and appropriate adaptation of traditional counseling techniques by school-based staff can assist in the process of gathering essential information from students that can enhance the effectiveness of the assessment  and referral process.

Lifelines Intervention addresses two of the more daunting challenges faced by school resource staff: convincing resistant students and/or parents that a mental health referral is warranted. Lifelines includes a DVD that illustrates specific techniques for use with both students and parents who may be resistant to either the conversation about suicide risk or referral for an off-campus mental health evaluation.

NY Supplement:  Participants will also receive education in the use of common assessment tools used in New York State and an introduction to Safety Planning Intervention and means restriction parent education resources.
