More and more individuals are living with dementia. The number of individuals diagnosed with dementia will continue to increase, and it is very likely that you will be in contact with someone living with dementia. Whether you provide direct or indirect care and support to individuals living with dementia, this workshop is an excellent learning opportunity. 

This Positive Approach™ to Care Workshop will help build awareness and skill for acute care providers, nursing staff, hands-on care partners, CNAs, Family Care partners, counselors, and professionals who work with or provide care for individuals living with dementia. Through this training, professionals and care partners can communicate more effectively and provide quality care and support to individuals living with dementia.

Five house of Continuing Education possible for Social Workers, Marriage & Family Therapists, Professional Counselors, and Nurses with application;
Lunch will be provided

By completion of this five-hour (beginning level) workshop, participant will be able to:

• Compare and contrast "normal" aging versus "not normal" aging related to various cognitive functions
• Describe the five sensory input and processing systems, highlighting the dominant role of vision
• Discuss the rationale that supports Positive Physical Approach™ process with people living with dementia
• Discuss purpose and value of using Hand-under-Hand® technique with people living with dementia
• Discuss the rationale for seeing persons living with dementia as GEMS® versus other numbering systems

Teepa Snow, MS, OTR/L, FAOTA, created the materials to be used in Positive Approach™ to Care (PAC™) workshops and has authorized the Certified PAC Trainer to facilitate workshops using PAC materials:

Kathy Tuckey, MA: Workshop Facilitator:
Kathy is a Dementia Training Specialist and Certified Positive Approach to Care Trainer, Mentor and Speaker. She earned her BA and MA from Montclair State University NJ. Kthy has help leadership roles in the assisted living industry as both an executive director and resident relations director. She served as Program Director for the Alzheimer's Association Georgia Chapter for over eight years. As Program Director she was responsible for dementia training for professionals and family caregivers, as well as all Alzheimer's and dementia programming in a seventeen county region. Kathy has over 25 years of experience in the area of aging and dementa and has also provided care to a variety of personal friends and family members with various dementias. She currently provides consulting servies and training in the area of dementia. Kathy is the 2013 Columbia County (GA) Chamber Business Woman of the Year.

Nurses:  As an American Psychological Association approved provider CES programs are accepted by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Every state Board of Nursing accepts ANCC approved programs except California and Iowa, however CES is also an approved Continuing Education provider by the California Board of Registered Nursing, (Provider Number CEP15567) which is also accepted by the Iowa Board of Nursing. Nurses completing this program receive 5.0 CE hours of credit.

The goal of our workshop is to build awareness and skills to acute care providers, nursing staff, hands-on care partners, CNAs, family care partners, counselors, and professionals who work with or provide care for individuals living with dementia. Our goal is to educate more professionals on the symptoms of dementia so that the appropriate referrals are made to care physicians. We want to teach providers and practicioners to reduce risk in professional settings when working with individuals with dementia. By building awareness and skills, we hope that professionals and care partners can communicate more effectively and provide quality care and support to individuals living with dementia and their care partners.
