7:00 a.m. Leave Deerfoot City Mall East parking lot (near Wal-Mart) on the BassBus
9:00 a.m. Arrive at Antler Valley Farm (https://www.antlervalleyfarm.com/): Antler Valley Farm is a 5th generation grain farm located near Innisfail. The McAllister family grows 4,000 acres of malt barley, wheat and canola and are a zero-till operation. At Antler Valley Farm, participants will tour the farm and hear from the McAllister’s who will talk about their farm’s history, growing malt barley and other crops, using cutting edge technology on the farm, being a leader in the ag industry and more.
10:00 a.m. Drive from Penhold to Alix (Subway sandwiches on the bus). Meet bus speaker Pat Juskiw, barley breeder, at Subway in Red Deer. Participants will learn about the breeding process including the various malt barley and feed barley varieties, the history of barley breeding and growing in Alberta and more.
11:30 a.m. Arrive at Rahr Malting (http://www.rahr.com/). At Rahr Malting, participants will tour a large-scale malt operation and learn about the malting process, why we can grow some of the best malt in the world here in Alberta, the contracting process with farmers and more.
1:30 p.m. Drive from Alix to Lacombe
2:30 p.m. Arrive at Blindman Brewing (http://www.blindmanbrewing.com/). A craft brewery located in a small Alberta community using local ingredients to produce quality, flavourful beer. At Blindman Brewing, participants will get an inside look into the brewing process with a tour of the brewery and of course, tasty beer samples.
5:00 p.m. Arrive back at Deerfoot City Mall East parking lot.
